About Mellen

Mellen is situated on the historic Bad River, in the scenic Chequamegon National Forest and next to the wooded hills of the Penokee Mountain Range.

Founded in the late 1880’s, Mellen is noted for its variety of outdoor activities, Mellen boasts an abundance of pristine lakes, miles of rambling streams, and a wooded paradise. Fish, hunt, hike, bike, ski, snowmobile, ATV, or simply relax.

A center of the lumber and tannery industries at in its early days. Mellen has grown with the times and yet still provides the services and hospitality you expect in Northern Wisconsin. A little known fact about Mellen is that its Veneer mill supplied birch for Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose. By far the biggest airplane ever built, the H-4, also known as the Hercules, had a wingspan of 320 feet–20 feet longer than a football field. Howard Hughes only flew the Spruce Goose once. It is named erroneously since it was mostly made out of birch.
