The Hurley area is home to ATVing, Hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and many other recreational opportunities. There are 200 miles of ATV trails in Iron County.
Built in 1917, the Annala Round Barn, just south of Hurley, is the only round barn in Wisconsin made entirely of massive field stones. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings.
The rivers in and around Hurley flow northward toward Lake Superior and they produce more than 30 waterfalls in the Hurley Area. Many of the falls have public access. To name a few there are Gile Falls; Foster Falls; and Wren Falls. Many of the falls are on the Black River Scenic Byway. Both Superior Falls on the Montreal River near Lake Superior and the Potato River Falls drop 110 feet and 90 feet, respectively. In spring, Saxon Falls, also on the Montreal River forms three miles of rapids through Montreal River Canyon. This stretch is only for experienced kayakers.
There are 377,900 acres of forest land in and around Hurley. The Northern Highland – American Legion State Forest, the Chequamegon National Forest and Apostle Island National Lake Shore, the Ottawa National Forest and the Porcupine Mountain State Wilderness are all in close proximity to Hurley.
Timber wolves, deer, black bear, moose, elk and beaver populations are well established in the area and growing. For those who enjoy birding there are trumpeter swans, sandhill cranes, eagles, osprey and loons throughout the area.
